Sport Clubs

Badminton Club

Aim: To unite all the badminton enthusiasts.
It is open not only for skilled players, but also for absolute beginners who want to discover the beauty and the passion of the game. Badminton is a very dynamic and competitive sport, which required technique development practice on a regular basis. We have been organizing Jacobs University Open Badminton Tournament annually. We have all the equipments necessary so, people may not bring their own.

Advantages
Considering the fact that badminton is neither predominantly female, nor a male sport, and in the same time has worldwide popularity, the club could discover hidden sports talents among the students who so far have not dared to practice a more aggressive sport such as football, basketball, or rugby. Moreover, Badminton is proven stress releaser, which would be extremely beneficial for those who have accumulated academic pressure, thus making them more satisfied with the University experience as a whole. Of course, as any other club in Jacobs University, the badminton club will open its "doors" to every enthusiast, be it from or outside the university.

Meeting Place: Sport Hall 1

The club has a sports and recreational function. We aim at both doing some sport activity and having some rest and fun in the same time;
We usually practice regularly but have more intensive practises before competitions;
The aim is to form a squad which will support the Jacobs teams even during regular games not only in competitions;
We are currently looking for a professional trainer;
Regular meetings are Sunday: 10-11pm in Sports Hall 1

The Graduate Cricket Club

This club aims to gather people who love cricket more than their sleeps and claim to be hardcore cricketers. We enjoy the time on weekends playing cricket and preparing for some hard matches on sports days. Many graduate students drop down to sports hall 1 on saturdays and sundays to get rid of whole week long lab work. Join us for some nostalgic experience in cricket!

Football Club - Female

Want to have some fun? The women's soccer team cordially invites you to join the team!

For practical reasons, the women's soccer club started to have joint practices with the local club next to the pool, SV Grohn. Thus, you get not only the opportunity to play soccer, but you'll also be able to apply your German language skills and get in touch with the "real" Bremen-Nord. Practice takes place on Tuesdays from 8 to 9:30 pm in sports hall 2 and on Wednesdays from 7 - 8:30 pm on the only field with floodlights - the one next to the pool. Moreover, Jacobs students have a weekly extra practice on Sunday afternoons from 5 to 6:30 pm in sports hall 2.

All players are more than welcome to just come by at any of these practice slots. Prior experience is absolutely not necessary, we have all sorts of skill levels.

See you on the pitch!

Meeting Place: Sport Hall 2  & Field Next to the pool.
Meeting Times: Tue 20:00-21:30 & Wed 19:00-20:30 & (extra) Sun 17:00-18.30
Contact: Carola Betzold c.betzold@jacobs-university.de & Tory Sigmond t.sigmond@jacobs-university.de

Football Club - Male

The Jacobs University Football Club (Male) chooses the 20 best players every year after a tryout. There are practices 2-4 times a week, depending on the season. While the main point of the club is to have fun, the club is also striving to be slightly more competitive than the other football teams in the university. By fall 2008 the club is hoping to be in a league, competing against local teams on a regular basis. Unfortunately, the club is not open for everyone, but anyone interested in playing should get in touch with the club leaders.

Meeting place: Sports Hall 2 (winter) & Football Field (Fall & Spring)
Meeting times: Mon & Fri 20.00-22.00 (winter) & Wed and Sat 16.00-18.00 (Fall & Spring).

Lacrosse

Lacrosse is one of the fastest ball sports in which the players pass a ball over the field with a stick (a shaft with a net on top of it) and try to shoot goals. Lacrosse is one of the oldest ball games in the world and it was originally played by the Indians in North America. Called "Baggataway" (little brother of war), it was seen as a spiritual game. Today, with standardized rules it is being played all over the world. The Lacrosse Club at Jacobs University plays this sport every Sunday from 4-6 pm and we welcome everyone who wants to try something new to join us!

Martial Arts Club

The club brings together people interested in - well - martial arts, what else. At the moment three disciplines are practiced: Karate, Taekwondo and Wing Tsun, but we're quite flexible - depending on members' interest and knowledge to be shared.
Perhaps there is something unique about student club atmosphere. Although those of us, who practice regularly, do take it seriously, we can't help slipping into funny mood every now and then. There are times to work on refining your technique: doing it over and over, again and again, as if nothing could be more important than getting your body into that exact correct and perfect position. There are times to test your strength, speed, reaction and capability to defend yourself. Then there are these really tough times to prove your determination, when "I can't take this much longer" seems to be the only thought in your head. But there are also times to laugh and fool around. All these different times blend together into a unique experience of challenge, personal growth, quite a bit of fun and forging social bonds extending far beyond the practice time/space.

Meeting place: Sports Hall 2
Meeting times: Wed 20.30 (Karate, Teakwondo) - Thu 19.30 (Wing Tsun) - Sat 10.00 (Karate, Teakwondo)

Rugby Club

The Jacobs Rugby Club aims at introducing the basics of Rugby Football to all students who are interested, providing a safe environment for fun and healthy physical activity. In addition the players who reach a certain level of skill and are committed to the game have the possibility to join the official Bremen Team downtown, currently competing in the Regionalliga Nord (http://www.rugby-bremen.de/). In this way foreign students could experience more of the German language and culture as well as travel to many cities of northern Germany.
Furthermore, every year the Rugby Club represents Jacobs University at the competitive international Hamburg Exiles Sevens tournament (http://www.hamburg-exiles.de), as well as at a number of other friendly games. We are also aiming at having international tours soon and connections are already open in Italy and Poland.
Our team always showed great commitment, courage and sportsmanship - join us and you'll join a family!

The Slacklining Club

Slacklining is a sort of high-rope walking (except directly above the ground such that falling poses no danger) and greatly trains one's balance and awareness, is a great concentration exercise and above all, is a lot of fun. Originally a popular balance sport only amongst rock-climbers, it is by now widely practiced on college campuses in the US and is constantly gaining more popularity. The Jacobs Slacklining Club started in the Fall 2007 and quickly grew to about 50 members who like to get together after classes in the evenings to relax a bit from every day stress while slacklining. Meeting times and frequency can vary widely but usually Thursday evenings hold a good chance to encounter the Slackers, and spontaneous Slacking sessions are announced to all members by email. We have multiple lines by now and welcome everyone who would like to train their balance or work on their concentration or who just want to relax a bit while doing something fun to join us. Please contact us any time if you would like to join the mailing list.

The practices are held twice per week - on Friday and Sunday. The team is in close cooperation with the Jacobs Volleyball Club and friendly games are often arranged.
The team recently took part in Eurosportland 2007 in Milan.

The plan for the next year is to maintain the club and develop even stronger men's team which to represent Jacobs University in a local league and in tournaments.

The Ballroom Dancing Club

The Ballroom Dancing Club is a student-lead club, that welcomes everyone and anyone. The main purpose of the club is to have a fun time dancing, with good music, enthusiastic dancers, and here and there a really fancy dance move. The dances covered include the standard ballroom dances divided into the Latin-American dances (Samba, Cha Cha Cha, Rumba, Paso Doble and Jive), and the classical dances (Slow Waltz, Tango, Viennese Waltz, Slowfox and Quickstep). A few other dances are introduced as well.
The sessions are divided into a weekly hour-and-a-half beginners, Wednesday evenings, and advanced, Saturday afternoons, sessions, taking place on the fourth floor of the IRC building. In the beginners sessions the focus is on learning new dance steps, while in the advanced sessions the emphasis is more on the particular technique behind each step. Additionally, a team in formation dancing is trained and puts up a short show programme each year, performed at various university-wide events.
We hope to have you join the club!

Breakdown Dancing Club

Eastern European Dance Club

The Eastern European Dance Club (EEDC) was officially established two years ago and since then it has actively taken part in the community life at Jacobs University Bremen.

The purpose of the club is to increase the knowledge of the students of Eastern European traditions and to enable more people to perform these dances. The EEDC also represents our university in the context of the city of Bremen, as we have taken place in events like the Street Festival in Grohn, the visit of the EU ambassadors on campus, etc. The club also participates in annual events like the Talent Show, Dancestoned and many other.
Dancing is in general pleasureful and fun activity. Dancing and learning in the same time makes the task intriguing and useful. For this year the club has already started rehearsing and preparing performances for different events on campus as the All University Ball and Dancestoned.

The club members are themselves very proud of being able to dance so many different kinds of dances and always excel on intercultural events and parties on campus. Dancing in the EEDC is undoubtedly an enjoyable experience, a good exercise and our way of building the positive image of Jacobs University."

The Oriental Dance Club

The Oriental Dance Club (ODC) was founded in 2003 by Dr. Oezen Odag, a Turkish graduate student at the time. In her dance lessons, Oezen created a very special mixture of rigorous ballet practice, elements of modern dance, and the sensuality of Oriental movements. ODC members included women from all continents, except Australia; also, the ODC was one of the rare campus clubs that attracted members from nearly all university groups: undergraduates, graduates, alumni, and staff. Practice times ranged from once-a-week to day-and-night, depending on how close we got to our next performance.

The ODC performed frequently on and off campus over the past 4 years, including 3 full evening performances ("Fatma's Henna Night", "Sherazade and Roxalana", "Femmes"); what is more, the ODC was invited twice already to perform in Turkey. Oezen received her PhD and left Jacobs University in the summer of 2007. However, her spirit and beautiful choreographies are carried on by her remaining students who have started an ODC beginners class in Fall of 2007.
The aims of the club are to celebrate body, heart, and soul with the beauty of dance.

The first hour consists of a ballet warm-up, while the second hour is devoted to Oriental movements and choreography.

"Pulse of the World" - Student Newspaper

At Pulse of the World, we aim to serve the Jacobs University community by informing, stimulating debate, promoting accountability and facilitating communication. And of course, to look and sound good doing it. We've been doing all that since 2004 and are only headed onwards and upwards from here!

We've been Jacobs University's only independent student-run news source since 2004. Currently inhabiting the virtual sphere at www.pulseoftheworld.com, we cover all aspects of life on campus, from special events to policy changes to student opinion. Keep an eye out for our upcoming print edition, giving all members of the university community another way to join the debate.
They're supported in their work by an ever-growing team of top-notch journalists and photographers, who somehow find time in their busy schedules to contribute superb writing on a variety of topics and usually under tight time constraints. Feel free to worship those incredible contributors at your convenience. They make the job of editing infinitely easier.

An incredible amount of support is also provided by Tino Kreutzer, founding father of Pulse of the World who now contributes from afar. Tino is currently based in the Central African Republic, but this globetrotter is always on the move, so this location may not apply for much longer.

Rotaract Club

The Rotaract Club is the student branch of Rotary International. We are a community service club and aim at helping people outside Campus by social projects. Being the only international Rotaract Club in Germany, our most important competence lies in teaching English. Our current project is "English for Kids" in cooperation with the Kinderhort Ebenroder Straße. Once a week we are meeting a group of around 10 children to teach them English in a playful way. Other prospective projects are the teaching of English to parents, cooperations with nursing homes etc.
Our other two branches are the entertainment of our members by interesting or just fun excursions as well as by presentations.

Arts & Performances

Theatre Arts Club

The renewed Theatre Arts Club (formally the Theatre Club) focuses on the arts of performing, producing and experimenting within the realm of theatre.  Part of our activities are also aimed at enjoying and appreciating theatre here in Bremen, and hopefully another cities around.
However, our main aim this year is to create an independent and productive group, and a solid club that remains even after key members leave the university.

Project and activites for this year include wokshops (stage work, voice, body and mind, improvisation etc etc.) set up by myself and/or external guests and small and large productions. We are aldready working on a compilation of small plays by Anton Chekhov, and we have in mind a large project for next year, a play by Henrik Ibsen.

We are also planning on attending several plays produced here in Bremen and possibly Hamburg.

Motion Capture Studio

The MCS main activity is to help with the recording of on campus events. We mainly work on demand, but we have our own projects as well. Any club can contact us to record one of their events, such as the talent show, cid's, brimun, debate etc. We are currently trying to develop a project for next semester, that will consist of a short movie or an internet tv show. Last semester we were able to film a show that was broad casted over the internet to more than 200 students being a great success. If you like filming, being behind the camera, or you just love being on camera, then this is the right club for you!

Music Club

The Club operates since 2001 and is one of the most active clubs on campus. The main goal of the club is to facilitate musicians of our community in practicing and performing. The aims of the club are rather diverse and flexible, but center around the idea of creating (bands), capturing (recording abilities) and facilitating (assisting and organizing) music related activities. We organize annual events such as the Acoustic Night, and one-time events such as musicals. We are interested in motivated musicians who have time and energy to play with others. We are also interested in recording artists for recording projects. There are no regular meeting times. We only meet in smaller groups based on interest and project. The meeting place is the music room (behind the IRC).

Pottery Club

As our name says we make pottery. Not just cups and bowls, but anything our creative members can think of. From welcome-signs to alien-sculptures, from flowerpots to decorated boxes, everything is possible. While creating our artistic and everyday usage pieces, while preparing Christmas presents or birthday gifts, we sit, talk and listen to music. Pottery involves more than creativity as many regular members, occasional guests and friends meet to distress from the hectic Jacobs life. Everyone is welcome to our sessions, be it beginners or advanced level clay-artists and of course once finished creating a piece one can take it home.

Moreover, in fall 2006 we organized our first exhibition. This was not just fun to organize but it was also a great way to show the Jacobs community what incredible capacity for expression lies within clay. This year the pottery club is involved in the Deepawali celebrations by offering a workshop during the pre-events on how to create traditional clay pots.  Also this December the PR-Club organizes an art day in which the pottery club will host a workshop.
We are confident that the workshop will continue to inspire and fascinate all those that dare to enter its doors.

Academic Clubs & Other Societies

A.B.C.S - African, Black and Caribbean Students Association

African, Black and Caribbean Students Association was founded in 2001 by students of then International University Bremen to celebrate as well as share our African Heritage to the community.  The association comprises of over 50 students and faculty from about 15 different African and Caribbean countries all currently enrolled or employed at Jacobs University Bremen. We also have a strong alumni base that is actively involved in the association in different capacities.

ABCS undertakes in several informative, educative as well as interesting endeavors in our quest to reach its goals of enlightening fellow students and the Bremen community. For example, last year we participated in the AKUMUTA festival in Bremen, a charity event to raise funds for orphans in West Africa. We performed several original African pieces and also had conversations with many enthusiastic Bremen residents about Africa and the Caribbean. On a local level one of the most important events we host is the Annual Black History Week. Black History week is a cultural celebration showcasing our culture in the form of music, dance, poetry and speech. We also invite esteemed guest speakers to give a talk on issues that affect people of African origin on topics that range from science, arts, business, politics and many more.

This year we are also planning on several interesting projects like the Africa discussion groups which we are currently working on.

The Logistics Chain

What is Logistics? What is the supply chain? From ultimate source to ultimate destination, the entire process that a product goes through from the raw mineral to the final output, that is the tip of the logistics iceberg. So is it enough to absorb, comprehend, assimilate and apply the knowledge gained through classroom lectures to achieve a substantial level of expertise in the issue? I think not.

The Logistics chain, emanating from the idea of a study group, is a classroom outside a classroom, a place of learning and teaching, a stage created for us to present our doubts and ideas, a platform from which we delve beyond ink and book, a tool to tap our full potential and prepare us for class and beyond.

Through our weekly meetings, practical and fun assignments and active participation of member's we achieve our goals of learning more. The agenda of our meetings includes updates on news in the world of Logistics, presentations on what we learnt in class and its application in the real world followed by discussions and debates on the knowledge we gained succeeded by a final question-answer session.

Our future plans include subscribing to Logistics information resources such as magazines and newspapers owing to constraints on finding free information, scheduling visits to Logistics companies to get a first-hand view of logistics processes and Building a website to display the presentations and results of our activities for everyone to see.

Model of United Nations (MUN) Society & BRIMUN

The Model United Nations Society is one of the largest student organization on campus. It was founded in 2001, two years after Jacobs University Bremen opened its gates for the first time, and hosted its first BRIMUN conference in April 2004. Today, members of the society participate in workshops and MUN debates to train their public speaking skills and to enhance their knowledge of international relations.

In the past, the club has sent out its members to various Model United Nations conferences in Europe and the United States, including the Security Council Simulation at Yale University (New Haven), VIMUN (Vienna), OXIMUN (Oxford), LIMUN (London), UNISUN (Utrecht) etc. For this academic year further trips to Northern Ireland (QUBMUN) and to Switzerland (WorldMUN) are on our agenda.

BRIMUN stands for Bremen International Model United Nations and it is a MUN Conference that greets qualified delegates from a wide variety of universities around the globe. BRIMUN is normally organised by members of the MUN Society but not necessarily. Want to get involved? Contact us!

PR Club - Public Relations

The Public Relations is not a new club but this year, after the change of the presidency, it has  undergone major changes. The new mission of the PR Club is to become the most important and the most active organizer of events on campus and, in that way, to contribute to the life and spirit of the community. Our aim is to organize at least two independent events per semester and to help the other clubs in the organization of their own projects. So far, we organized the traditional internship welcome back dinner which was cancelled by the Administration. However, with the support of the club members, of volunteers, and of the Admin we managed to make this event possible. Now, we are in the process of preparing another event which will be open for everybody from the community. Furthermore, we will continue working very closely with the Admin and more specifically with the CSC.

Additionally, the members of the Club have the opportunity to get a real idea of PR and to develop their organizational and communication skills. Therefore, on regular basis, we will organize workshops for the members of the club. For example next week there will be one on Public Relations and, later, on presentation and technical skills. We will also visit companies in Bremen and the area to acquire real-hand experience in the sphere of PR.

Psychology Club

As the president of the Psychology Club, I would like to inform you about our goals. These are basically to provide important information to fellow psychology students (such as about grad, schools, conferences, and internship positions), to push their interests, increase collaboration with the psychology faculty and reach out to interested students of other fields.

The club officially started to exist at the end of last semester. Our current goals are to develop and get approved 2 self-study courses in clinical and developmental psychology, respectively,
as well as to be involved to some extent in the debates about a new professor for the Psychology department.
We don't meet on a regular basis, but essentially if something worthwhile for discussion comes up. Our vice president is Sarah Ann Horn.
