We have exchanged the Toshiba printers with Konica Minolta printers on Oktober 26th and 27th

Therefore the queue name changed to konica.

This change will not automatically update your configuration or PPD file.

The information given for Mac OS X is complimentary and shared with best intent and knowledge. There is no support for Mac computers at Jacobs by IRC-IT!

Requirements

  • Mac computer running OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard
  • You need to be logged in to your computer using an account named exactly as your JACOBS user account aka CampusNet account
  • You need administrative access to the computer
  • Download the printer description file C552.ppd

Installation

If you don't know, what this all means, please read Mac OS X v10.6: Mac 101 - Printing before continuing.

Use the System Preferences, Print&Fax dialog to add an "IP" printer with the following properties:

Protocol Line Printer Daemon - LPD
Address qpilot.jacobs-university.de
Queue konica
Print Using select "Other..." and load the printer description file downloaded above

The result looks like this:

After clicking "Add" a second dialog appears asking for printer features: just click "Continue" there.

More Information

For additional information on printing with Mac OS X Snow Leopard, see Apple's page Mac OS X v10.6: Mac 101 - Printing.

Users of earlier versions of Mac OS X may want to add an IP (LPD) printer as documented here or may want to try using smb://sprint01.jacobs.jacobs-university.de/QPilotToshiba as the Windows shared printer as documented here.

The fact that Macs are not supported by this university is wrong and a major nuisance. I am aware of the fact that this is not the fault of IT (thank you, in fact, for providing the instructions here), but the first sentence of this statement stands nevertheless.

I agree with you. It would be nice if IT department did a periodic statistics (3-5 years time) to see the distribution of OSes or devices on campus and adapt their policies accordingly.

Wonderful! There is a solution to install a light bulb without rotating the entire house (i.e. mac users can use the improved, in my opinion, Jacobs printing system without changing the username on the mac system).

According to Oliver's comments from the Unix page:

It's even easier to use the web interface for adding a printer: Bring up

http://localhost:631

then go to Administration -> Add Printer and enter the information provided above.

I have done just that with Mac's PPD (driver) file and the printer's address "lpd://MYUSERNAME@qpilot.jacobs-university.de/toshiba". It worked right away

Smb printing works since yesterday. For those that are not logged in with their campusnet username, SMB seems to be the only option. Or is there a way to add the username and password to the LPD syntax?

Never mind. I figured it out:

lpd://CAMPUSNETUSERNAME@qpilot.jacobs-university.de/konica

works even if you're logged in using any other username.

I also wrote a new guide for printing from Snow Leopard and Lion. You can find it here:

https://teamwork.jacobs-university.de:8443/confluence/x/64JcAw

It's especially helpful for people who don't have their local username the same as their campusnet username, and it doesn't require a PPD file.
