Dell has identified a potential issue associated with certain batteries sold with Dell Latitude, Inspiron, XPS and Dell Precision Mobile Workstation notebook computers. [...] Dell is voluntarily recalling certain Dell-branded batteries with cells manufactured by Sony and offering free replacements for these batteries. Under rare conditions, it is possible for these batteries to overheat, which could pose a risk of fire.

Battery replacement starts on December 4th for DELL Laptops at IUB

If you are affected, please follow Dell's advice:

Batteries subject to recall should not be used while awaiting a replacement battery pack from Dell. You may continue to use your notebook computer using the AC adapter power cord originally provided with your notebook.

IUB is negotiating with Dell on how to proceed best and easiest for our users. Please stay tuned for updates.

Update 2006-08-15 17:15

No student laptop for issuing in o-week 2006 is affected!

According to Dell Germany, new batteries will not be available before mid-September.

A reasonable solution for IUB members will be found until then. Stay tuned with Blog!

Update 2006-08-16 10:30

There also has been some confusion about whether to input "O" or "0" (zero) into the battery ID tool on the website. The answer is always use "Zeros."

Direct2Dell

(warning) See update 2006-08-21 13:45 below for a correction!

Update 2006-08-16 17:45

Of the 4.1 million battery packs recalled, "only" 90,000 were sold in Germany, according to Heise News.

Update 2006-08-17 15:30

From the Direct2Dell blog:

First Replacement Batteries Shipped to Customers

[...] we're already shipping replacement batteries. The first battery shipped yesterday to a customer in Cincinnati, Ohio.

We understand that affected customers are concerned when they might receive a replacement battery. We know how important it is to keep your laptops mobile, and we are working at a feverish pace to accommodate all affected customers. Right now, it will take 20 business days to get it to you.

http://www.direct2dell.com/one2one/archive/2006/08/16/1946.aspx

Update 2006-08-18 13:45

Dell account teams are working with corporate customers directly to establish a replacement plan that will meet their specific needs.

http://www.direct2dell.com/one2one/archive/2006/08/17/1997.aspx

IUB's account manager is back on Monday, talks are scheduled for then on how to proceed for IUB members.

Update 2006-08-21 13:45

The instructions of Dell regarding using "0" or "O" were incorrect. Here is Dell's correction post:

Need to correct earlier statements I made on this blog regarding entering your battery serial number (PPID) on the battery recall site. My sincere apologies for the misinformation.

Here's what I can say:

  • The first 15 characters [of] your PPID only contains zeros.
  • The last 5 characters may contain the number 0 (zero) or the letter O.
  • Since the last 5 characters can contain both a 0 (zero) and/or a letter O, please be careful when you are entering your battery serial number.

Some Direct2Dell readers have asked whether the system identifies invalid numbers. The answer is no. Will aim to provide more clarification on this early next week, but wanted to get this correction out after I could confirm the above details.

http://www.direct2dell.com/one2one/archive/2006/08/18/2035.aspx

Friendly advise from the poster: just try both.

Update 2006-08-24 12:15

IUB received a list of laptops affected by the battery recall. Tally: 133!

Below is the list of relevant devices at IUB. Please check, if you are affected. IUB is working together with Dell on a solution to make the replacement as easy as possible for all. As most of the affected machines are issued to students currently away from Campus, and new batteries have to be produced anyway, it is expected that encompassing measures will not take place before mid-September 2006.

In the meantime, please follow Dell's advice:

Batteries subject to recall should not be used while awaiting a replacement battery pack from Dell. You may continue to use your notebook computer using the AC adapter power cord originally provided with your notebook.

  1. Sergei Soubatch has a battery, which should be replaced, but this one is already a battery he received as a replacement some time back (orig. battery was defect).
    How do we proceed here?

    PPID: JP-0C2603-45872-46U-1UVJ

    85C8X0J Dell Latitude D 600

    1. We are currently negotiating with Dell to get a bunch of batteries centrally delivered. We will organize a replacement period where users can stop by and have the battery replaced. After that period, remaining affected users will have to follow the Dell procedure individually.

If the laptop is not on the list, but the battery is identifyable as to be replaced, it will be replaced.

Users at IUB having a laptop not on the above laptop list, but who do have a battery which should be replaced due to the recall, please comment on this issue so that we can get enough batteries from Dell.

      1. Can you please give an update on this issue – when should we expect the battery replacement? Many thanks, C. Hilgetag

        1. We are still negotiating the details with DELL but i assume that we can announce the details within the next week.

  2. Any further news? Best, C. Hilgetag

  3. Finally the batteries arrived but without any information for which laptops these batteries are. Just a bunch of batteries.

It took some time but we managed to get the information we need to replace the batteries. We will start to replace the batteries next week. I will post the exact dates and procedures on Monday.
