In Using a Wiki: A Textbook Case, Stan Gibson looks at creating textbooks using wiki. I think he's written a great piece on one of the most useful wiki applications, and one that's poised to dramatically change publishing. The experience of authoring and publishing Using Wiki in Education, the book entirely on a wiki has made so much more sense to me than print publishing. Even if one were to ultimately publish in print, using the wiki for authoring makes revision a snap, and allows for unprecedented collaboration between multiple authors. We're on the verge of something big here - I did it with my book, and you can do it too! Imagine having your students write a collaborative textbook as a course assignment as they learn material - can you think of a more effective, and engaging means of assessing how much they've learned and how well they understand it?
