Blog from August, 2010

In the past Service Desk for Faculty and Staff has used the software NetReflect from enteo (then FrontRage) for remote desktop support on managed client computers. We will retire use of NetReflect soon.

Instead, Service Desk for Faculty and Staff will now use "TeamViewer" for enhanced reliability and speed. The unobtrusive, thin quick support software client will be rolled out to Jacobs Domain Computers.

The Datenschutzbeauftragter (Data Protection Officer) has been involved in the process and asserts:

Data Protection Aspects of TeamViewer Quick Support Client installation and operation of TeamViewer Quick Support Client ensures your data protection rights comprehensively: The software can only operate upon YOUR installation and upon YOUR request (it must actively be launched) - there´s no background activity of any kind, no logging or other background data processing. You have full control about the application since it generates one-time-passwords for each session. YOU must provide this one-time-password to the respective supporter - and YOU can terminate each session freely. The supporter only has access to your client with your consent and as long as you wish.

For more details on the software please see Remote Desktop Support Client Software.

After the transition to the new software has been completed, the NetReflect software will be removed from Jacobs Domain Computers.

Issuing laptops to incoming students who ordered one before orientation week 2010 will be done in the Service Desk for Faculty and Staff office this year.

The infrastructure running virtual servers has been upgraded during the last weeks to a new software release, VMware vSphere 4.1, offering better resource management.

This was performed while the virtual servers continued running, there was no service interruption, and no-one has noticed the live upgrade.

On Thursday 26 August 2010 between 07:00 and 08:00 local Bremen time servers and network components will be updated.

Server and network operations will be unreliable. Expect unavailable servers and sudden downtimes of services without prior explicit announcement.

If you have to work on files stored on the server during that time, then before the maintenance hour copy the respective files to your local hard disk, work on it locally, and after finishing your work and after the end of the maintenance interval, copy them back onto the server.

For more details on the maintenance hours see the Maintenance Hours page.

CSTL refresh underway

As announced here, the equipment in the computer science teaching lab (aka computer science teaching hall, aka mathematics teaching hall, aka Res.I lecture hall, aka Res.I Room 52) is currently being exchanged to be ready for the upcoming fall 2010 semester.

The seven year old Solaris server-based installation are exchanged for disk-less and fan-less desktop clients with 21" monitors. For lectures, the systems will operate as Linux-based desktops, though the disk images are streamed over the network, and are centrally administered.

Usage of the room as "Internet Café" or for Windows-based courses will be possible.

Within this project, the viewing stations in the IRC library will be exchanged for new systems, too.

The setup has been harmonized between CSEE, CLAMV, and IRC.

Here are the first pictures of the old and new facility:

There is a change in procedure this year regarding the “Rights of IRC Staff for IRC Operations” (aka IRC Rights Agreement, see Forms).

In the previous years, signing this document was a necessary prerequisite for immatriculation of (new, incoming) students.

After deliberation with the data protection officer, this agreement will no longer be distributed to incoming students, signing it is no longer a prerequisite for immatriculation, and the signing status need not be record in CampusNet.

An upcoming revised Telemedia Guideline will set the legal foundation regarding use and management of IT/Tk infrastructure and services for employees, students, and guests alike.

Admin01 malfunction

Services located on the server Admin01 are moved to other servers due to the malfunction of Admin01.

The public folder can now be found on Admin05 (\\admin05.iuhb01.iu-bremen.de\public)

Printers are moved to sprint01.jacobs.jacobs-university.de wich is our new print server. This server is currently configured only for printers used by admin staff (other Jacobs University printers will follow).

You need to disconnect the mapped public folder/drive from admin01 and map the public drive/folder on Admin05 (see How to... map a network drive).

Also you need to delete printers located on admin01 and add the neccessary printers from sprint01.jacobs.jacobs-university.de.

This is an easy process, takes less than a minute, and is described at How to add network printer to Windows client computer, including a screencast. Instead of the faculty server for the IUHB02 domain as given on that page,
(star) use \\sprint01.jacobs.jacobs-university.de in the address bar to browse for printers. Then follow the documented procedure accordingly.

If you do not delete network drives and printers located on admin01 your system can become very slow because it will still try to reach the server in the background.
