Overview

All Jacobs University Members and Jacobs University Visitors have access to printers shared over the network. The print queue is available within the Jacobs network and accessible by "any" computer.

Prints can be retrieved from any Jacobs networked printer on campus by using the appropriate CampusCard. Printout starts only after inserting the CampusCard into a printer terminal ("follow me printing"), allowing flexibility in time and location of retrieval, while preserving confidentiality of printouts and reducing unnecessary prints.

Use discretion in naming your files and print jobs, as this information is potentially public to anyone!

In addition, all Jacobs University Members can use the scanning feature of the network "printers" for free.

An FAQ is available at FAQ JACOBS network printing and scanning.

This printing and scanning system will supersede the previous admin and faculty print servers.

Printing for Yourself

Windows

To setup Jacobs network printing, first follow the guide How to configure Jacobs network printing on Windows once.

If you are working on a Jacobs domain computer, you need to be logged in with your Jacobs user account.

If instead you are working on any other Windows computer, you need to authenticate yourself with your JACOBS user account upon connecting to the print server!

Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard

(warning) The information given for Mac OS X is complimentary and shared with best intent and knowledge. There is no support for Mac computers at Jacobs by IRC-IT!

To setup network printing, first follow the guide How to configure Jacobs network printing on Mac once.

To be able to retrieve your printout later, you need to be logged in to your Mac computer using an account named exactly as your Jacobs user account aka CampusNet account, or you need to configure your system to present your Jacobs user account to the print server, while printing.

For additional information on printing with Mac OS X Snow Leopard, see Apple's page Mac OS X v10.6: Mac 101 - Printing.

Linux openSUSE

(warning) The information given for Linux is complimentary and shared with best intent and knowledge. There is no support for Linux computers at Jacobs by IRC-IT!

To setup network printing, first follow the guide How to configure Jacobs network printing on Linux once.

To be able to retrieve your printout later, you need to be logged in to your Linux computer using an account named exactly as your Jacobs user account aka CampusNet account, or you need to configure your system to present your Jacobs user account to the print server, while printing.

Printing for Others

If you want the print output to be retrieved with a different card (e.g., by an assistant, or if your local computer account does not match your CampusNet user account), you'll need to use a special software. The software is available for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux. The software will install a local print queue Qpilot_Konica on your computer. Printing into that local queue will open up the Qpilot application, which asks for a card number before sending the document on to the print server.

See How to install the Qpilot software for Jacobs network printing for installation instructions, and How to use the Qpilot software for Jacobs network printing for help regarding printing with that software.

Retrieving the Paper

To retrieve the paper, go to any Jacobs network printer, enter the appropriate CampusCard into the attached card reader and follow the displayed instructions to get the printout. For additional information using the card reader, see How to operate the CampusCard terminal for Jacobs network printing.

(warning) The number of the CampusCard used to retrieve the print output must correspond to the card number specified during printing, either implicitly by being associated to the user account used for printing, or explicitly by being entered in the Qpilot client software upon submitting the print job!

Printing Costs

Costs are deducted from the CampusCard used upon retrieval of the printout.

Printing is free for business use by employees (i.e., called "official" on the CampusCard reader display), all other use must be paid for.

In February 2011, prices per page for printouts and copies were set as follows:

Additional Printing Information

All printers within the Jacobs network printing option are of the same type: Konica Minolta Bizhub C552, with finishers FS-527 PK-517 (2-hole). They support duplex printing, stapling (only upper left corner for portrait documents), and 2-hole punching.

Output jobs, printed or unprinted, and scanned documents, retrieved or not, will be automatically removed from the server after three days.

If a printout is required, please use duplex and black&white printing whenever possible.

Please print responsibly. Mind the costs and the environment!

Scanning

The networked printers can also be used for document scanning. Scanning requires use of a personalized campus card, i.e. scanning with guest cards is not possible.

After inserting the CampusCard, select button "Copying" on the card terminal. Put your paper source on the copier, but do not hit the "Copy" button. Instead, above the printer's display, select the "Scan" function button, then on the printer display/touchpad tick the "Scan to Email" entry. An address book shows up: use the first and only address listed. Do not change any of the displayed information, especially do not change the displayed email address, and do not add another address (e.g., yours) - it won't work.

If you are using the paper feed for providing the scan input, after scanning all sheets the scan ends automatically. If you are using the glass surface for providing the scan input manually, after you scanned the last page you need to hit "Finish Scan" on the touchpad of the printer to end the scan job. The CampusCard needs to stay in the card reader until after the scanned document has been sent out by the printer.

After ending the scan job, an email is sent to the email address of the user account associated with the campus card used for scanning. The email contains a link with username and password to download the scanned file. Scanned files are purged after three days from the server.

Password not accepted?

Better use CTRL + C (STRG + C) and CTRL + V (STRG + V) to copy and paste the password instead right click "copy" and "paste" using the mouse

See How to operate the CampusCard terminal for scanning for more details.

Scans are free, i.e. need not be paid for.

Please scan responsibly. Mind any copyright!

FAQ

Please see FAQ JACOBS network printing and scanning.

Known Issues

  • The Qpilot software client lists all prints as "Color: No", and gives a sum of costs of 0 EUR.
  • The only possible destination email address upon scanning still needs to be selected from the address book of the copier.

  1. The Mac instruction is not working for me, and I would appreciate the help of anyone who has gotten mac printing to work (s.springer@jacobs-university.de).

The fact that Macs are not supported here is a major nuisance, and even though I know that it is not the fault of IT personnel, it still remains a wrong decision by the administration.

    1. The generic Linux procedure should also work for Mac, as the printing system (CUPS) is the same. Just go to http://localhost:631, then add an LPR printer using the URL

      lpd://MYUSERNAME@qpilot.jacobs-university.de/toshiba

      .

  2. I am unable to find a list of the network printers on campus to which all community members have access, i.e. graduate students who don't live on campus. Is there a list somewhere? Thanks.
