Blog from July, 2011

On Thursday 28 July 2011 between 07:00 and 08:00 local Bremen time servers and network components will be updated.

Server and network operations will be unreliable. Expect unavailable servers and sudden downtimes of services without prior explicit announcement.

If you have to work on files stored on the server during that time, then before the maintenance hour copy the respective files to your local hard disk, work on it locally, and after finishing your work and after the end of the maintenance interval, copy them back onto the server.

For more details on the maintenance hours see the Maintenance Hours page.

eduroam (education roaming) is the secure, world-wide roaming access service developed for the international research and education community.
eduroam allows students, researchers and staff from participating institutions to obtain Internet connectivity across campus and when visiting other participating institutions[...]

(From: http://www.eduroam.org)

eduroam is now available within Jacobs University's WLAN. It enables

  • visiting researchers and students to seemlessly connect at Jacobs University WLAN, if they use eduroam at their home institution;
  • Jacobs University members to seemlessly connect at other institutions that offer eduroam access.

eduroam is now the preferred method for WLAN connection over the current "JACOBS" WLAN.

Configuring a device to use eduroam for world-wide network connection is non-trivial. Please see the various configuration how-tos at How Tos regarding eduroam configuration for configuration information, and follow those as close as possible.

For more information about eduroam, lists of member organizations, FAQs and more see http://www.eduroam.de/ or http://www.eduroam.org/

Jacobs University is now member of the DFN-AAI and a Shibboleth Identity Provider (IdP). Shibboleth is a federated user authentication scheme.

This enables Jacobs University members to access Internet web services of third party Service Providers, who use Shibboleth for federated user authentication.

How it works

If a Jacobs University member accesses a Shibboleth-enabled web service, the service provider will redirect the user's browser to a Shibboleth login page of Jacobs University. Authentication is performed with the Jacobs user name and password on the Jacobs University authentication web page, so this confidential information is not transmitted to the service provider.

If the authentication is successful, the Jacobs University authentication web page presents to the user a list of attributes which will be transmitted to the service provider.

By default, no personal information is transmitted to the service provider. The service provider only receives an anonymous persistent identity token and the affiliation type. The service provider can not associate the token with any person by this information alone. Some services can require additional attributes before being usable.

If the user confirms transmission of attributes to the service provider, the user's browser is redirected to the service provider's service page and granted access to the service (or not, depending on the service).

Any additional information entered on the service provider's web page is under control of the user, including submitting any personal data.

Additional information is available at Wikipedia, the DFN AAI page and the Internet 2 Shibboleth page.

Service Examples

The following third party services are examples of Shibboleth-enabled web services available to Jacobs University members:

  • Gigamove is a free and secure web service to send or receive large files up to 2GB (requires additional personal data to prevent abuse)
  • Microsoft Dreamspark a free software repository from Microsoft (requires a free Windows Live account)

On July 18 and 19 2011 the Jacobs WLAN access points will be upgraded to enable eduroam capability. Each access point will be down for a minute or two.

This should go by unnoticed where WLAN coverage is extensive. In other spots the upgrade might cause a short WLAN network interruption.

On Thursday 14 July 2011 between 07:00 and 08:00 local Bremen time servers and network components will be updated.

We are currently experiencing a problem with the Qpilot printsystem.
Therefore printing might not be working and the cashcard terminal could beep and show error messages.

We contacted the responsible company to solve this problem.

Known issues:

The little data led blinks once or for only a short time

(tick) Wait until the printer is fully warmed up and ready for printing before you start to print.

Printing suddenly stops and the last page shows an error message (e.g. ERROR: limitcheck, OFFENDING COMMAND: gsave)

There is an issue with the telephony system in College Nordmetall. Telephone calls are connected, but there is no voice communication possible. This affects only calls between College Nordmetall and calls from or to outside the college - calls within the college are not affected.

Update 04.07.2011 15:45

The issues are resolved and the phones are working as they should.

This is an automatically generated measurement of key performance indicators (KPIs) of Application Provisioning Services for June 2011.
