Blog from April, 2012

"The LDAP Server" ldap.iu-bremen.de, operational at Jacobs University almost from its beginning, will be switched off on May 24, 2012. This does not affect "regular" Outlook domain users, and does not affect users with the Exchange connector in their email client.

But, if you still access that old LDAP system as address book for your non-Exchange email client (e.g., Thunderbird, Kmail) or for service authentication, please use the Active Directory cluster installed March 2009 instead, with the address jacobs.jacobs-university.de (warning) Please note, the active directory will require user authentication.

Detailed setup information for various clients is available at How to configure Email Client for JACOBS Lookup.

Some emails were delayed on April 24, 2012. Students and employees were affected alike.

The issue was resolved around 15:30 and all emails queued up were then quickly delivered.

On Thursday 26 April 2012 between 07:00 and 08:00 local Bremen time servers and network components will be updated.

Server and network operations will be unreliable. Expect unavailable servers and sudden downtimes of services without prior explicit announcement.

If you have to work on files stored on the server during that time, then before the maintenance hour copy the respective files to your local hard disk, work on it locally, and after finishing your work and after the end of the maintenance interval, copy them back onto the server.

For more details on the maintenance hours see the Maintenance Hours page.

This has been caused by a full disk drive. We are currently moving the affected mailboxes to new and free drives.
We expect that this proccess will take until today evening.

Maildelivery will start again as soon as the mailbox is moved to the new drive. Since then all incoming mails are queued.

Since Saturday 02:30PM mail delivery has stopped for the following mailboxes (mailboxes marked as "moved/fixed" are receiving mails again):

Malfunction of authentication backend for JACOBS wireless lan, Apr 3rd, between 4:20 and 9:45 a.m.

The JACOBS wireless lan is driven by an el cheapo software solution – to save money – based on a database backed RADIUS solution.
The RADIUS component was subject of a operating system vendor-supplied security update, which trashed our site configuration files.
Our working configuration could be restored from backup, and the authentication system for the JACOBS wireless network is back up.

Hint for Jacobs University users

A better, safer and faster alternative to the JACOBS wireless lan is the use of the eduroam network. Though the initial installation is more complex, but the benefits include:

  • hassle-free connection
  • safer data transmission (WPA2 encrypted)
  • available in lots of other places, as most scientific institutions run eduroam

Network interrupted Sat 31st, 12:40 p.m, for NC A and west part of NC B

According to our network monitoring system one switch went dead on Sat 31st, around 12:40 p.m.
This leaves 48 rooms in NC A (3rd, 4th and 5th floor) connected, but disconnected all other rooms in NC A, the west wing of NC and the westerly half of NC B's north wing, as well as it disabled all wireless access points in the above mentioned area.

As the troubled device has to be replaced, the interruption will continue several hours.

During the replacement network access in the above mentioned apartments still having access now will be interrupted, too.

This is an automatically generated measurement of key performance indicators (KPIs) of Application Provisioning Services for March 2012.
