Blog from March, 2015

As part of our ongoing change process to improve our services, we are very happy to announce that all students of Jacobs University now have the following Microsoft Office 365 features available for no additional cost:

  • OneDrive for Business: 1 TB of web-based, online, personal file storage, shareable, with sync between Windows PCs (and Macs in a preview version)
  • Online versions of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote: edit your files in a web browser everywhere, from any device
  • Download and use of Microsoft Office Professional Plus software on Windows PC and Mac

These products can enhance your collaboration in your studies, the quality of your papers and presentations, and enable you to be more productive by accessing your files faster and easier. Also, this is a great opportunity to gain a competitive edge in your job qualifications by acquiring familiarity with office software and a cloud environment used by many companies around the world.

You can find details, how to get the Microsoft Office 365 features up and running, guides for installation, and further helpful information here: Microsoft Office 365 for Jacobs University.

If you have further questions or need help to get it up and running, please contact our Service Desk for Students, see Service Desk for Students.

On Thursday 26 March 2015 between 07:00 and 08:00 local Bremen time servers and network components will be updated.

Server and network operations will be unreliable. Expect unavailable servers and sudden downtimes of services without prior explicit announcement.

If you have to work on files stored on the server during that time, then before the maintenance hour copy the respective files to your local hard disk, work on it locally, and after finishing your work and after the end of the maintenance interval, copy them back onto the server.

For more details on the maintenance hours see the Maintenance Hours page.

Internet fibre connection broken

At approx 10:30 a.m. today our Internet fibre link went down, our provider analyzed this to a cut cable somewhere around Gröpelingen. We are currently using our wireless backup line, with limited bandwidth, though.

Our provider started fixing the broken cable, but there is no estimate on when our connection will be back up with the full bandwidth up to now.

Update 2015-03-04 17:15

Our provider has quickly moved digging equipment and a crew to the site. They are currently drilling for a new tube to put the fibre in. Depth of more than 4 meters and heavy amount of ground water make the drilling complicated. It is unlikely, that the repairs will be finished before tomorrow.

Update 2015-03-05 16:15

Unfortunately the drilling of the new tube yesterday was unsuccessful, and another attempt using a different route is under way at the moment. Once this is finished, the new fiber cables have to be spliced. We are looking forward to the possibility, that the link is established again later this evening.

Update 2015-03-05 17:45

The new drilling, because not as deep as before, has now a drainage canal in its way, which needs to be bypassed, prolonging the operation considerably.

Update 2015-03-06 09:30

The current prognosis for reconnecting the fibre cable is noon today.

Update 2015-03-06 12:15

The last drill attempt was successful, now the fibre cable is spliced. Please expect the Internet connection restored to full bandwidth at around 14:00 today.

Update 2015-03-06 13:42

Our Internet connection is restored!
