Blog from May, 2015

On Thursday 28 May 2015 between 07:00 and 08:00 local Bremen time servers and network components will be updated.

Server and network operations will be unreliable. Expect unavailable servers and sudden downtimes of services without prior explicit announcement.

If you have to work on files stored on the server during that time, then before the maintenance hour copy the respective files to your local hard disk, work on it locally, and after finishing your work and after the end of the maintenance interval, copy them back onto the server.

For more details on the maintenance hours see the Maintenance Hours page.

Do not give your username and password to anyone

This applies for all services that you use (warning) Not only here at Jacobs University (warning) No serious company or service will ever ask you for your username and password at this way.

There are currently phishing mails send to Jacobs University members with PDF attachments.

These mails are apparently from DHL Paket, Sparkassen-Finanzportal GmbH or similar but in effect from various addresses (e.g. reclamation@wasserbett24.com, info@hildagroll-photography.de, rezeption@gemeinschaftspraxis-mosebach.com).

The subject varies but is similar to Nachverfolgung Ihrer Sendung 63584235465 or Transaktionsbestätigung 84288966932 / 19. May 2015 07:08:54.

The attached PDF itself seems virus free but contains a obvious link to DHL or Sparkasse wich is in effect not and points to a total different address (e.g. http://pluginsdevelopment.inveera.biz/bTaLpSHF9o, http://www.raisbaek.no/HTsxKmWe2).

From there you can then download a zip file wich will most likely contain a virus.

Do not download and open this .zip file

This will harm your computer and data (warning)

We are trying to take measures against such spam / phishing mails and additionally block the known targets (e.g. http://www.raisbaek.no/HTsxKmWe2).

Dear IT user at Jacobs,

as unwanted ads in our postal mailbox we get lots of unsolicited emails advertising some products. While most of these are harmless, as in “real life” outside IT, some emails are meant to trick you into revealing sensitive information. This is called phishing.

These phishing emails want you to visit a web site and enter your Jacobs account data or personal information there. This is often reinforced by mentioning some obscure limits being reached or a short deadline or by threatening to charge money if not followed. These emails often appear to come from some known sender and/or look the same as a popular service many use, e.g. Amazon, Ebay, Paypal and/or contain a link to a site, which, upon closer inspection, actually does NOT lead to the site shown in the email, but to a different site and/or have funny spelling mistakes and/or ugly formatting (beyond the normal, non-funny mistakes, that is).

Falling victim to such a trickery might lead to you entering subscribed services you’ll have to pay for, the abuse of Jacobs’ infrastructure for a snowball effect, and might harm all of our users as it will make us unable to deliver your emails to your communication partners and thereby will seriously impact your and anyone else’s learning, teaching, research, or administrative tasks.

Please remember, BEFORE you click a link from an unknown sender, with obscure content leading to a website different from what you expect (what did you expect?) and BEFORE you enter data there, make sure it is a service which exist and which you want to use. These general guidelines might help to prevent falling victim to phishing scams:

  • Jacobs’ departments will NEVER ask you for your password.
  • Never give your data or your login to anyone else.
  • There are no systems called “Blackboard” or “Course Online” at Jacobs University.
  • Check the web page address in the browser. Does it match your expectation? Does it match something you know and have used already?
  • Don’t do something you don’t want to do and don’t know why you need to do it, based on an unexpected email from an unknown sender leading you to an unknown web site.

If you receive a suspicious email and are unsure how to proceed:

  • Check the IT home page if this incident is already known; you can also subscribe to our blog feed, follow us on Twitter or Like our Facebook page to get notified in time about new incidents.
  • Send an email to itsupport@jacobs-university.de and attach the suspicious email. Please don’t forward the original email, but instead, attach it.

If you fell victim to such a phishing email, don’t hesitate, but contact IT support immediately, by email to itsupport@jacobs-university.de or by phone to #4666, and describe what happened. We’ll help!
