eduroam Access

Setting up eduroam the first time is a bit complicated, but allows roaming across organizations. It is the recommended enforced network access method at for members of Jacobs University.

See How Tos regarding eduroam configuration for first time setup. You'll need your JACOBS user account.

To access some services, in addition you will need VPN Access.

Although setup of eduroam is more complicated than the setup of Jacobs Access, it is the recommended WLAN setup, as it uses strong encryption for the wireless data transmission, and is available in wireless networks of at other participating institutions worldwide.

Guest Access

The network is operated in "managed" or "infrastructure" mode.

No password is required to connect, but only very few sites are available through WLAN without additional login.

For full network and Internet access, you guests have to login to the network , either by

In any case, you need your JACOBS user account to proceed.

Guest Access

For guests, WLAN access can be established by issuing temporary accounts. using temporary, individual accounts via a web form.

The host should send a request to IT Support in time at least one full work day in advance, containing:

  • the name and abbreviation of the event
  • the dates from when up to when the access is required
  • how many accounts you needare needed

The host will receive a PDF documents document for printout, containing snippets with account infos to be distributed to the guests individually.

(info) Remember, Jacobs University is offering eduroam access for members of participating organizations, hence eduroam members don't need this dedicated guest access.

If you require secure communication, be sure to use the eduroam setup or use web pages via https and/or use VPN Access over Jacobs WLAN!

 The "JACOBS" WiFi network is inherently insecure. Additional layers of security need to be employed to secure any data transfer.

Event Access

For non-academic events, the "EVENTS" WiFi needs to be used. 

For network and Internet access, participants have to login to the network using a temporary account via a web form.

The host should send a request to IT Support at least one full work day in advance, containing:

  • the name and abbreviation of the event
  • the dates from when up to when the access is required

The host will receive a username/password combination to distribute to the event participants.
