This FAQ gives additional information regarding the Introduction of JACOBS network home drive.
Who gets a network home drive?
Every member of the JACOBS domain. This requires a CampusNet account and an appropriate associated "actor type", i.e. membership status.
Do students get the network home drive?
As Admin user I already have my "User_Data" folder on the admin server!
Use of that folder is deprecated. Please move your files to the new network home drive.
How much storage is available?
Currently 1GB per user. On a Windows domain computer, you'll get a message box if you try to exceed this. You'll also get occasional threshold warning messages if you are close to the limit.
I can't store my DVD collection/PC backup on the H: drive!
The H: drive is not a "backup" drive to store whole computer hard disk data backup sets on it. It is also not intended as a mass data archive or backup dump disk, or movie repository. Use local DVD burners or cheap USB hard drives instead.
The H: drive is a user's home drive to reliably store the user's work documents, images, spreadsheets, etc., for its own purposes, not for sharing.
I need storage space to share within my department/project!
A file server for collaborative and departmental file storage is upcoming, too. Please use teamwork or the admin/faculty file servers until then.
I am using a JACOBS domain computer. Where is my home drive?
It's available as drive H: (as in "home").
What is a JACOBS domain computer?
Only computers installed and maintained by IRC-IT can be members of the JACOBS domain. Computers from the current IUHB01, IUHB02 and GRADUATESTUDENT domains will shortly be moved into the JACOBS domain.
It is not possible to join the JACOBS domain on it's own, or have private or self-installed computerse be joined into that domain.
Not having a computer in the JACOBS domain does NOT mean, it is impossible to access JACOBS resources, e.g. network home drive. You do need a JACOBS domain user account to access resources of the JACOBS domain, though.
I am using a JACOBS domain computer, there is no H: drive!
Most likely, you are using a computer of Jacobs University, which is not a member of the JACOBS domain. This is either because your computer has not been moved yet from one of the legacy domains IUHB01, IUHB02 or GRADUATESTUDENT, or some other non-standard configuration. Please see the answer to the next question, on how to get the network home drive.
I am using a non-domain Windows PC. How do I get my home drive?
If your CampusNet account is "JDOE", connect to
\\storage.jacobs.jacobs-university.de\homeshare\j\jdoe You will be asked a username and password. Use JACOBS\JDOE as your username, and your CampusNet password as a password. As an alternative, you can "Map Network Drive" in Windows Explorer.
If you are savvy with the Windows command line, you can use the "net use" command in a similar way.
I open the Explorer, but get the Jacobs home page/server not found message, and can't find my files!
You are using the Internet Explorer. Instead, use the Explorer, e.g. by pressing WINDOWS-E (as in Windows-Explorer).
I am using a Linux system. How do I get my home drive?
The same as with a non-domain Windows PC. If your CampusNet account is "JDOE", connect via SMB/CIFS to
\\storage.jacobs.jacobs-university.de\homeshare\j\jdoe Use JACOBS\JDOE as your username ( escape the backslash appropriately), and your CampusNet password as password.
You can use the "smbmount" command from the shell in a similar way.
Tip from K. Korte Re: Linux:
under Linux all the backslashes should be slashes meaning:
mount -t cifs -o username=JACOBS/JDOE,password=JDOESPassword //storage.jacobs.jacobs-university.de/homeshare/j/jdoe /my/mount/point/would be the correct command.

here are two ways of making it work. Make sure that Samba is installed and that CIFS is supported by your kernel.
- GUI: Nautilus (the Gnome file manager) has a nice dialog for connecting to network drives: File → Connect to Server, and then:
- Service type: Windows share
- Server: storage.jacobs.jacobs-university.de
- Share: homeshare
- Folder: y/yourname
- User Name: yourname
- Domain Name: jacobs
- On the command line (or create an /etc/fstab entry): mount -t cifs -o username=yourname,workgroup=jacobs //storage.jacobs.jacobs-university.de/homeshare/y/yourname /path/to/mountpoint

If you are using KDE, fire up Konqueror and enter the URL:
smb://storage.jacobs.jacobs-university.de/homeshare/j/jdoe(with "j" replaced by the first character of your username and "jdoe" beeing your username).
I am using a Macintosh system. How do I get my home drive?
Similar to Linux.

In Finder click on "Go", select "Connect to Server...". Then enter the path:
smb://storage.jacobs.jacobs-university.de/homeshare/j/jdoeIn the authentication dialog enter your CampusNet username and password below the domain name "JACOBS".
What is the network name of my home drive again?
If you are using a JACOBS domain computer with a JACOBS user account, it is mapped as H:
The UNC path depends on your CampusNet username. If your CampusNet username is ABCDEFG, the network drive name is
\\storage.jacobs.jacobs-university.de\homeshare\a\abcdefg Note the "\a\" directory within the path, which is the first character of the CampusNet username under discussion, for CampusNet username "JDOE" that would be "\j\", etc.
How secure is my home drive?
By default, permissions are set so that you have full control in it, and no other user has any. Make sure, that you use an appropriately long and complex password!
If I look into the permissions of my home drive, there are other users present!
Administrators, Domain Admins, and SYSTEM are default accounts necessary for backup and maintenance purposes. If you remove these accounts from your directories, backup of your data will fail, and there will be no resilience against data loss for your data. Do not remove these accounts!
When I am at home, I can't get to my files on the H: drive!
The H: drive is only available on JACOBS computers, only if you login with your JACOBS account, and only within Jacobs University's network. Ensure to copy data to your local disk before leaving the campus. Remember to copy changes back onto the home drive after you returned, so that it is safe against accidental loss.
How do I get to my network home drive from outside campus?
You can use VPN Access to connect to the Jacobs network and then work with the computer and home drive as described above.
