Outage 2019-09-21

On Saturday, September 21, 2019, shortly after 8 pm network connectivity and most servers went down. 

The issue has been resolved and network connectivity as well as important servers have been restored to a working condition on Sunday, September 22, 2019, at around 10:30 am.

Missing servers are being restored during the day.

This incident is not related to the recent cyber attack.


As announced earlier (see https://teamwork.jacobs-university.de/x/IQA3Cw), from today on authentication to the JACOBS Wi-Fi is disabled for JACOBS members.

Instead of the JACOBS network, please use eduroam Wi-Fi connections. This is easier to use, more secure, and is available globally. Have a look at our HowTo's for configuring eduroam.

Access for guests to the university will be unaffected and still be possible as before.

Please contact Service Desk for Faculty and Staff if you need support.

On Thursday 09 May 2019 between 07:00 and 08:00 local Bremen time servers and network components will be updated.

Server and network operations will be unreliable. Expect unavailable servers and sudden downtimes of services without prior explicit announcement.

If you have to work on files stored on the server during that time, then before the Maintenance Hours copy the respective files to your local hard disk, work on it locally, and after finishing your work and *after* the end of the maintenance interval, copy them back onto the server.

We have been informed by the LKA (Landeskriminalamt) that our systems could  possibly be compromised.

Therefor we shut down all domain based services, except the login servers, for security reasons.

This effects services like datev, campus.net, printing, storage servers, etc.

So far we could not find any evidence for a security breach and waiting for detailed information from the LKA.

Update 14.02.2020 10:16AM

So far we could not find evidence for a new infection, but are still investigating our infrastructure.

To took further measures and secure our IT infrastructure, we set up a new antivirus system, currently as a trial, but most likely as a replacement for the build in antivirus clients. We will install this new antivirus software on our servers first and start a roll out to domain connected windows based computers in a second step.

We currently restarting all servers and services that we shutdown yesterday one by one. All restarted servers will be scanned with the new antivirus software and could therefor be experienced as slow.

We expect all servers and services are running again in the afternoon latest.


Update 14.02.2020 03:45PM

All server and services are up and running again.

We are still investigating and scanning the servers for malicious software. So far no evidence for compromised servers are found.

Due to the ongoing scanning and forensic the systems could be still experienced as slow and possible service interruptions are possible.  


We are currently facing issues with VPN where Clients cannot connect or experience a connect disconnect loop before the connection is enabled.

 

Our external service provider is informed and working on this issue.

Massive Server failure

We are facing a massive server failure and therfor services such as mail, file server, campusnet, print, etc. are not working.


We are working on the problem but it seems that the outage will take at least several hours.
