On Thursday 21 March 2019 between 07:00 and 08:00 local Bremen time servers and network components will be updated.

Server and network operations will be unreliable. Expect unavailable servers and sudden downtimes of services without prior explicit announcement.

If you have to work on files stored on the server during that time, then before the Maintenance Hours copy the respective files to your local hard disk, work on it locally, and after finishing your work and *after* the end of the maintenance interval, copy them back onto the server.

For more details on the maintenance hours see the Maintenance Hours page.

Dear member of Jacobs Community,

due to a technical change out of our influence some of our eduroam Wi-Fi configurations will stop working beginning of June 2019 and will need a reconfiguration, please read on! This situation will potentially affect all of your devices using eduroam Wi-Fi, including laptops, mobile phones, and tablets, university-owned devices or private ones - if it has Wi-Fi, this process is relevant.

If you received a computer from IT Support since September 2018 or if you used the eduroam CAT tool to perform the eduroam configuration, all is well, you don't need to do anything.

However, if you configured eduroam manually, there is a need to change your device's configuration BEFORE June 2019. You need to set up your eduroam configuration anew using the eduroam CAT tool (see below).

If you don't know your eduroam configuration, just use the CAT tool to reconfigure your connection.

You can follow our HowTo's for eduroam configuration using the CAT tool here: How Tos regarding eduroam configuration

This will ensure, that your Wi-Fi connection stays secure and you can continue using eduroam Wi-Fi beyond June 2019.

If you are unsure, please contact Service Desk for Faculty and Staff if you need support.

Starting April 2019 we will contact you by email if we detect a Wi-Fi connection from your device using the old configuration.

Sorry for the inconvenience,
Torge Schmidt

(Head of IT & IRC)

We would like to alert and sensities you about the still, actual and always ongoing spam, phishing, phone scam, etc.

Jacobs University is still and always facing a huge spam, scam and phishing wave, because we always have users who fall for it.

So please read and act accordingly:

If you think, you are getting many spam / phishing mails, we have some numbers for you.

On thursday 11/13/2018, for example, we block 85% of all mails send to us.

Which is in numbers:

51000 mails in total.
43000 mails are obviously spam, phishing, containing viruses, etc. and blocked by our external (linux) mail servers.
9000 mails are forwarded, from our mail servers, to Exchange Online Protection (EOP), before delivery to our internal (exchange) mail server.
1500 mails are filtered by EOP because of spam, phishing, viruses, etc.

7500 mails are delivered to mailboxes.

~85% is the average of blocked mails, who are obviously spam, phishing, containing viruses, etc..

Beside this automated processes we delete spam / phishing mails manually, if we recognise them.

But all of this is useless, if you click on any link or attachment you receive without considering what you are doing.

Think twice, before opening links or attachments

Do not give your username and password to anyone

Really (warning) Don't give it away (warning) Don't give your username and password to anyone (warning) Never (warning)

There is a new uprise of fraud telephone calls at Jacobs University posing as computer support from Dell or Microsoft, etc, in English or German. The callers sometimes know your name and would like to validate your contact details and/or "offer" to remove malware, get your computer repaired or optimized, and request remote access or want you to install software, for free or not.

Do not accept this unsolicited "offer", which is an attempt to install malware on your computer, steal your data, get money from you, and make the world a worse place to live in.

Just hangup and carry on. As usual, do not give your accountname or password to anyone, nor give credit card details, nor allow remote access to your computer for unknown callers!
