Spam / Phishing Wave

Do not give your username and password to anyone

Really (warning) Don't give it away (warning) Don't give your username and password to anyone (warning) Never (warning)

We currently face a relative massively spam / phishing wave.

Some of them are only made for Jacobs University and try to look "official". Why? Because with every phishing wave there is at least one University member who fall for.

Be sure that we, nor any other email, social media, etc. provider, will never send you a mail that urge you to login somewhere immediately just to protect, unblock or release something.

Unfortunately it is difficult to detect and identify phishing mail with a spam filter. This is because of the format of such mails. They are just text with one link and typically come from a regular mail account and server, because of someone else falls for phishing and has given his username and password to someone.

As we get aware of such mails we will block the linked web address from within our university network.

But you can mostly identify phishing easily by your self.

Always be skeptical if you are ask or forced to log in to release or gain mail or any other content. You haven't do this before, to get your mail/data.

And you were never asked to log in to any of our systems to protect your account or data from deletion.

Be alarmed if the sender menaced or urged.

Read your mail in plain text. As you can see in the examples below, you are not only seeing the link text, like click here or www.exchange.jacobs-university.de/renew oder <<hier klicken>> but the hole link. And obviously the link does not point to our university nor read something with jacobs-university.de like teamwork.jacobs-university.de or exchange.jacobs-university.de or campusnet.jacobs-university.de or....

Even if you clicked on the link, accidentally, you can see that this is no university website, if you take a look at the address field of your internet browser.

If you hover over the link with your mouse, you typically see a little window/pop up which shows the address behind the click here link.

Most, but not all, phishing mails are a grammatical disaster.

If you are unsure, ask us! Forward the suspicious mail to itsupport@jacobs-university.de and we will check if it is spam or phishing.

And again, do not give your username and password to anyone

(warning) Never, never ever, really never, give your username and password to anyone (warning)

The mails mostly look similar as the following examples:

On Thursday 23 March 2017 between 07:00 and 08:00 local Bremen time servers and network components will be updated.

Server and network operations will be unreliable. Expect unavailable servers and sudden downtimes of services without prior explicit announcement.

If you have to work on files stored on the server during that time, then before the maintenance hour copy the respective files to your local hard disk, work on it locally, and after finishing your work and after the end of the maintenance interval, copy them back onto the server.

For more details on the maintenance hours see the Maintenance Hours page.

We are currently in the process of migrating the mail server to new hardware and a newer version (from Exchange 2010 to Exchange 2016).

Therefore you will experience a new look when you log on to OWA (Outlook Web Access / https://exchange.jacobs-university.de ).

The log in window will look as follows:

As long as your mailbox is not moved to the new mail server, it will look the same as it has for the last years, after successful log on.

If your Mailbox was moved it will look as follows:

There will be no changes for mailclients (e.g. Outlook, Thunderbird, etc.) as all addresses for Pop3, Imap, etc. stay the same (exchange.jacobs-university.de). NOTE the update below!

With Outlook you may receive a pop up which indicates that there were changes made for your account from autodiscover.jacobs-university.de. Please accept these changes by clicking Allow.

Updates to the current state of the migration as of 2017-02-17

The changes didn't work as well as planned (or documented). We are sorry for the inconvenience, delay, and confusion.

On Wednesday evening due to a misconfiguration emails to non-Jacobs email addresses were not being delivered, that was fixed on the same evening, all stuck emails were then sent out immediately.

On Thursday late afternoon, a different "undocumented delayed feature" led to emails to non-Jacobs email addresses not being delivered again, that also was fixed on the same evening, all stuck emails were then sent out immediately.

Some email clients unfortunately do need a reconfiguration to work properly again: if the client uses an Exchange connection to the Exchange server (instead of IMAP/POP/SMTP), and the PC running the client is not member of the JACOBS domain, then the username used for authentication to the server needs to be prepended by "jacobs\" (i.e., would read "jacobs\campusnetusername"). Also, the username needs to be in all lowercase letters. This does not affect IMAP/POP/SMTP or OWA login, only Exchange connections in clients (aka EWS). The documentation at Jacobs Email has been amended accordingly.

Thunderbird clients may see "error 12" errors. These will go away during the next days after we will have done further migration work, or you can contact Service Desk for Faculty and Staff to have this fixed for you immediately, or you can set the parameter "mail.server.default.send_client_info" to disabled. The error itself does not have any effect on sending or retrieving emails.

Sorry again for the inconvenience this migration caused. If issues persist, please contact Service Desk for Faculty and Staff

Our service provider informed us, that our main trunk of our Internet connection is currently broken. The fiber cable was damaged somewhere near Bremen's port area. They are underway fixing the cable, but cannot provide a resolution estimate.

Meanwhile our Internet connection is routed through our backup wireless connection. The backup connection has a limited bandwidth, please expect a slow Internet connectivity throughout the day. Network access on campus is not affected.

Update 12:00

Driving in a sheet pile wall on a construction site in Bremen has cut and significantly damaged our main Internet connection cable. A new cable has to be dug in and connected, which will presumably take the better part of the afternoon.

Update 15:10

The regular Internet connectivity is restored.

Images from Site

The following images show the construction site and the machine causing the issue.
