On Thursday 20 September 2018 between 07:00 and 08:00 local Bremen time servers and network components will be updated.

Server and network operations will be unreliable. Expect unavailable servers and sudden downtimes of services without prior explicit announcement.

If you have to work on files stored on the server during that time, then before the Maintenance Hours copy the respective files to your local hard disk, work on it locally, and after finishing your work and *after* the end of the maintenance interval, copy them back onto the server.

For more details on the maintenance hours see the Maintenance Hours page.

Dear member of Jacobs Community,

One of the central security factors for the IT systems of Jacobs University is the password with which you all log in to your different devices, accounts and platforms on a regular basis – your central Jacobs University login. In order to reduce the amount of spam mails in our accounts, to better protect the data of Jacobs University from unauthorized access and to meet the necessary security requirements, an adjustment of our password policy is absolutely necessary.  Therefore, we need to significantly improve the security level of all passwords by increasing the complexity of the permitted passwords.

The following rules are now mandatory:

  • Each password must consist of at least * (eight) characters
  • Each password must not be longer than 20 (twenty) characters
  • At least one character must be contained from at least three of the four character categories "capital letter", "small letter", "digits" and "special characters"
  • Please note capital and small letters are different characters.
  • The password must not contain the user's given name or family name

In order to ensure that all passwords throughout the university comply with these requirements, each Jacobs University member must set a new password, even if the current password is conformant. You can do this yourself directly on the CampusNet website https://campusnet.jacobs-university.de/ : My Data -> Change Password.

For now, your individual password only has to be reset once and does not have to be changed regularly.

It is also helpful to enter an individual non-Jacobs University e-mail address in the personal settings under My Data -> Personal Data -> Change -> E-Mail, via which you can reset your current password on the CampusNet login page in case you forgot it. (Tip: If you are overwhelmed by the number of logins and passwords you need to remember, you can use a password manager! A free product is "KeePass", available at https://keepass.info)

In order to give you enough time to change your individual password, the new password must be set until September 12, 2018. All accounts that have not set a new password after this day cannot log in to any device or platform from Jacobs University without setting a new password.

Your WiFi access via eduroam is also affected by the new password regulation. When your phone can’t connect anymore, you must enter the new password for this connection. Please note that you do not register here with your Jacobs University e-mail address, but with the user name "campusnetusername@jacobs-university.de".

In the interest of significantly improving the security of Jacobs University`s IT systems, I hope that you will understand these measures.

With best regards,
Dr. Torge Schmidt
Head of IT & IRC

Dr. Torge Schmidt

For Jacobs University devices managed by IT you can now use PIN or fingerprint to login to the device.

PINs must be at least six characters long, consist of at least one small letter, one capital letter, and one digit.

To use the fingerprint sensor, a PIN must be set before. Follow the system setting dialog to configure it.

The PIN/fingerprint is not a global replacement for the JACOBS user account. Instead, it only works on the one, single device it has been configured on.

Skype for Business is now available for students.

OneDrive for Business is now available for employees.

See Microsoft Office 365 for Jacobs University for details!
