Availability

At Jacobs University, all lecture halls and most of the campus allow Wireless LAN access.

Most of the access points are based on the standard IEEE 802.11n/g/b which operates at a nominal speed of 300 MBit/s.

For working at Jacobs University with wireless LAN you can use any 802.11b, 802.11g or 802.11n capable wireless LAN card.

If in doubt, check the manual of your computer or WLAN card, or consult your computer vendor.

eduroam Access

The network is called eduroam and will announce itself. You can also search for it.

Setting up eduroam the first time is a bit complicated, but allows roaming across organizations. It is the enforced network access method for members of Jacobs University.

To access some services, in addition you will need VPN Access.

eduroam uses strong encryption for wireless data transmission, and is available at other participating institutions worldwide.

Guest Access

The network is called JACOBS and will announce itself. You can also search for it.

No password is required to connect, but only very few sites are available without additional login.

For full network and Internet access, guests have to login to the network using temporary, individual accounts via a web form.

The host should send a request to IT Support at least one full work day in advance, containing:

The host will receive a PDF document for printout, containing snippets with account infos to be distributed to the guests individually.

(info) Remember, Jacobs University is offering eduroam access for members of participating organizations, hence eduroam members don't need this dedicated guest access.

Event Access

The network is called EVENTS and will announce itself. You can also search for it.

For non-academic events, the "EVENTS" WiFi needs to be used. 

For network and Internet access, participants have to login to the network using a temporary account via a web form.

The host should send a request to IT Support at least one full work day in advance, containing:
